Jesse and Christine at Vama

Jesse and Davin decided that the four of us should go out for supper. We roped Uncle Jacob and Auntie Kim into watching kids, convinced Christine that eating out was a good idea, and made reservations at a place that none of us had ever been to. Once Jesse was ready to go (the other three of us were out sitting on the lawn) we climbed into the Safari, braved the evening Arusha traffic made far worse by Ramadhan, and drove to the Shoprite plaza to “Vama – The Restaurant.”

Friends of ours have raved about the place and its food, and we were eager to try it out. There was only one other group there as we arrived, and Christine and I took a few moments to feel proud of the papa outside trying to console the newborn while his wife ate. Noble. For the rest of the evening we kept our eye on them coming in with a sleeping baby, sitting down to a screaming baby, and going back outside.

The decor and atmosphere are very nice, the menu is full of options with vegetarian, chicken, beef, mutton, and even seafood selections. Davin and I ordered mutton (of course) and Christine and Jesse ordered vegetarian. After complimentary veggies with sauces we had some chili paneer and some yummy mushrooms as appetizers. Even the main dishes came much faster than the posted “40 minutes”, and they were excellent.

Dinner conversation focused on Davin, his charming ways (including his desire to drink the lemon finger wash which he hadn’t encountered previously), the couple with the newborn, and Christine and my history of life… Including the fact that Christine and I have only *ever* had dinner out together alone three times. What can I say? We live life *with* people.

Good food, good times. We finished up, I had a cup of Masala tea, and we headed home with a doggie bag of food that is probably as much food as we actually ate. I think we’ll be back… when we feel like we need a fourth meal alone.

When we arrived in Tanzania in November of 2007, we “temporarily” moved into the corner house. It was supposed to be a short term solution while we renovated the blue tile house. Well, it’s now May 2009 and we’re renovating the blue tile house. Jeff & Jan arrive from Kitchener on the 19th (yup, that’s Tuesday), so we are scrambling to get things ready. As of right now (T-6 days) we are painting Natasha’s room, finishing the painting in the office, done painting the master bedroom, finishing up Jacob’s room (unless we decide to re-paint some walls… sigh). The stair railing is on (nice!), and the entire dining/living area is filled with stuff. The kitchen counter tiles are off (widening the gap for the stove), the cupboards over the fridge space have been raised (who knew we had a fetish for enormous appliances??) and tomorrow I’m hopefully going to find replacement tiles for behind the stove (where we ripped it apart to widen the gap…)

In the same breath as all that, we are working hard on the ADR for Nipe Jibu (re-recording the spoken lines in studio), we are getting the studio ready for the live instrumentation and mixing activities that will start on the 27th, and we are looking for a pro studio to do our final mix (any takers)? We’re also working on getting US Visas for the 9 Maasai we’re sending on tour in the US this summer, working on the budget for that trip (would you like to contribute something? Let me know!) and thinking about the stage presentation. We are also starting new ISOM training centers, working on translating the next semester into Swahili. Finally, we are days away from sending the Cheza! project (the incredible Sowers Group cd) to the printers to be produced for Africa. But all of that is a story for another day. We’re busy, but the scope of the projects we’re working on baffles me and I’m humbled by the opportunity to be a part of these projects.

We’ve had so many rainy days recently, much to the delight of the farmers (which in Tanzania means everyone), that today’s blue skies and gentle breeze has brought out the same feelings that those first lovely days of summer always do. It’s an invigorating feeling – you can’t shut the door, you don’t want to go inside, things as simple as freshly cut grass touch your senses in a beautiful way, and you wonder if it might just be possible to turn one of the 4wd trucks into a convertible. The seasons generally pass here without much note from us – Christine often says she finds it hard to mark the passage of time, but today I don’t mind – we even took some time out of the day to cut Jacob’s hair… outside.

6 websites, 3 cars, 2 laptops, our financial books, and a partridge in a pear tree. Things have been falling apart all around us, but we’re still standing. At one point last week Davin was working on all three of our Pamoja vehicles at the same time. The oil pressure on the Nissan Safari had fallen to zero and refused to get back up (fortunately the engine did NOT seize). The Patrol, meanwhile, had it’s left front wheel off as we fixed some of the bearings that had become oval shaped rather than circular. Then the Sunny, our little car, had a minor incident – the oil filter exploded while Davin and Courtney were on their way home at midnight one night. However, there seems to be no permanent damage, so that’s great. At about the same time, Jacob Mills’ laptop dropped dead as he was trying to finalize the paperwork for Pamoja USA, and mom’s laptop nearly died (we replaced the hard drive in it, but the battery charger is broken so when the power flickers even, her laptop dies). And then our web host went and dropped all our websites down the drain on Monday night. There are a surprising number of them! We’ve recovered www.pamoja.info, www.nipejibu.com, www.sjfeser.com (Mom and Dad’s personal site), and www.nadinelouise.com (Nadine’s personal site). As you can see here, we’re still working on icewife, and we’ve still got a few miles to go before we get www.en-kata.com back online to allow people to buy the En-kata photo book. So we’re working hard, but not yet all up and running. You might pray that nothing else breaks on us. I definitely don’t want to speculate on what’s next.

Through it all, though, we’re healthy, keeping our peace, and now that we’ve had our Quickbooks file restored (which we were not at all sure of for the entire month of April) we’re pretty sure there’s been nothing significant lost in all of this, except time. When I put it that way, it’s pretty clear that God’s still taking care of us through the messiness of life.
